Westminster Christian School is making waves in its community with a hands-on approach to sustainability. As an Enviroschool, they recently held their first Holistic Reflection, offering students, staff, and community partners the chance to celebrate the school’s growing impact on environmental restoration and waste minimisation.

A key part of their journey is their connection with Te Hononga ā Iwi – Restoring Rosedale Park, where students regularly roll up their sleeves to contribute to local restoration efforts. But it’s not just about planting trees—Westminster students show their commitment to decarbonisation by walking over two kilometres to their planting site and back, gumboots in hand, ready to care for Papatūānuku.

Beyond the Classroom
Sustainability at Westminster also extends into their own backyard. The school is actively improving its grounds by enriching soil biodiversity through bokashi composting and biochar. Partnering with Hibiscus Coast Zero Waste, students are turning food waste into nutrient-rich soil, boosting the productivity of their vegetable gardens and enhancing the future plant growth of their rain garden and swale—key design features to prevent flooding.

Dani Miller from Hibiscus Coast Zero Waste has seen the transformation firsthand:

"The transformation across the whole school from the first day we came in to do an initial waste audit to the time of the final waste audit at the end of the year was amazing. The change in attitudes and actions of the students and staff towards food scraps and waste in general was quite phenomenal. Food scraps are now being seen as a precious resource to feed our precious soil that helps to sustain us. There is pride and ownership across the whole school in running their new system which recovers food scraps to feed their garden beds and also has improved their recycling of paper and containers. The decrease in use of 'throwaway' items was really visible in the final waste audit. The whole school has been involved in the transformation although we only delivered education to the Intermediate students. Full credit to the Intermediate students and teachers for the way they have taken this learning and shared it with all the younger students and other staff members."

A Collective Effort
Westminster’s Enviroschools journey is supported by a network of community partners including Te Hononga ā Iwi, Whitebait Connection, Garden to Table, and Hibiscus Coast Zero Waste. These partnerships bring deep learning experiences to students and help embed a culture of kaitiakitanga within the school.

Lead Enviro Teacher Gail Goodwin shares her perspective:

"At Westminster, our environmental studies programme is designed to immerse ākonga in Te Taiao, enriching their learning through hands-on experiences with support from inspirational community partners. Our goal is to cultivate a deep-rooted sense of responsibility and empowerment, inspiring students to take meaningful action—both now and in the future—to protect our planet. By moving learning beyond the classroom and into nature, we awaken an innate desire in many students to safeguard the environment. They come to recognise the beauty and wonder of our world, understanding that it is not only worth appreciating but also worth preserving. As educators, our role is to foster these connections and nurture environmental awareness, starting within our own backyard and local community."

The Enviroschools programme in Tāmaki Makaurau is made possible through the support of the Natural Environment Targeted Rate, ensuring students continue to have opportunities for hands-on environmental learning.

Westminster Christian School is proving that when students are empowered, they don’t just learn about sustainability—they live it.
