"Making good use of energy involves simple changes."

Richard's life is a testament to sustainable living. Nestled in a serene suburban neighbourhood, Richard has transformed his home into a model of eco-friendly practices, showcasing how one can “live lightly” on the planet without sacrificing comfort or convenience. His journey is a powerful narrative of action, innovation, and sharing, aiming to inspire others to adopt sustainable habits.

Harnessing the power of rain

Richard’s sustainability journey begins with water conservation.

“We collect rainwater from the roof,” he explains.

His entire roof is connected to a series of pipes that channel rainwater into four Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs). This harvested rainwater serves multiple purposes: irrigating the garden, flushing toilets, and supplying the bathroom and laundry.

“We are not wasting beautiful, clean, potable water,” he says proudly.

The rainwater system is complemented by an electric pump, ensuring efficient distribution of water throughout the house. This simple yet effective setup significantly reduces reliance on the municipal water supply, demonstrating an easy and cost-effective way to cut down on water consumption.

Energy efficiency: solar and wood heating

Energy conservation is another cornerstone of Richard’s sustainable lifestyle. In the summertime, solar panels on the roof tap into the abundant solar energy to heat the household water. During winter, a compliantly installed wood fire connected to a radiator system warms the home.

“We have a wood fire, which is connected to a system of radiators that heat the rooms off and on just as we want them,” Richard explains.

This hybrid heating approach ensures year-round energy efficiency, reducing the household’s carbon footprint.

Additionally, Richard has made simple changes to enhance energy efficiency further:

The gas hob on the oven has been replaced with induction hobs, and energy-efficient light bulbs illuminate the home.

“Making good use of energy involves simple changes,” he notes.

“We’ve also put good insulation in the roof, and we installed a ceiling fan to distribute heat from our wood fire. All of these small additions have made a big difference.”

Food: growing, sharing and community building

Richard’s garden is a vibrant example of his commitment to sustainability. The front yard boasts native plants, while the back is a thriving food forest, with raised garden beds. Richard and his family grow a variety of vegetables and fruits, using compost made from food waste, and locally sourced resources like seaweed and manure.

“When we have more than we need, we share it with our family, friends, and community,” Richard says.

He collaborates with organisations that repurpose unsold food, ensuring that excess produce benefits others. This practice not only reduces waste but also fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility.

DIY and empowerment: learning and teaching

Richard emphasises the importance of do-it-yourself (DIY) projects in sustainable living.

“A lot of jobs can be done with simple tools and a bit of knowledge,” he says.

From installing rainwater tanks to setting up irrigation systems, Richard has tackled numerous projects with the help of online resources like YouTube.

This DIY approach empowers individuals to take control of their sustainability journey, making eco-friendly living accessible and affordable.

Legacy and motivation: a vision for the future

For Richard, sustainable living is not just about the present—it’s about the future.

“We have three grandchildren. They are inheriting the world that we have created. That is a big load on my mind,” he reflects.

His actions are driven by a desire to leave a healthy, vibrant world for future generations. By living sustainably, Richard hopes to set an example others can follow, proving eco-friendly practices are not only possible but also practical and rewarding.

Inspiring change: a call to action

Richard’s story is a powerful call to action for Aucklanders.

“We know the next generation has concerns about the future, and are looking for answers from my generation,” he says.

By sharing his experiences and practical solutions, Richard aims to inspire others to make small but significant changes in their lives.

From harvesting rainwater to growing food and embracing energy-efficient practices, Richard’s lifestyle is a blueprint for sustainable living. His journey demonstrates that with a bit of effort and creativity, anyone can reduce their environmental impact and contribute to a healthier planet.

Richard’s story is not just about what he has done—it’s about what we all can do to build a sustainable future and be resilient during challenging times.
