Live Lightly Shower and Save

Live Lightly Shower and Save is a pilot household energy efficiency project focused on reducing hot water use. It is delivered by Auckland Council’s Low Carbon Living team under the Live Lightly programme.

Live Lightly Shower and Save involves eligible Auckland households replacing existing shower heads with an efficient shower head, or installing a flow saver washer or shower timer. The project aims to achieve a measurable reduction in household carbon emissions and will run during winter 2018.

Why is Council doing this?

Under the Auckland Plan 2050, Auckland Council is committed to working with local communities to reduce carbon emissions. Live Lightly shows  everyday lifestyle choices we can all make to save money, have a healthier life and care for the planet.

Showers use around 80 per cent of a household's hot water, and hot water heating makes up around a third of a typical household's power or gas bill. Across Auckland, an estimated 175,000 homes have shower flow rates greater than nine litres a minute. One of the most cost effective ways of reducing energy use in these buildings would be retrofitting efficient shower heads or flow saver washers.

An efficient shower head uses around a quarter less hot water than most regular shower heads, while still giving a good shower experience. This would save the average three person Auckland household up to 33m3 of hot water per year, equating to approximately 157 kg CO2-e, and a $380 reduction on annual energy and water bills (Source: Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority, Watercare and Auckland Council).

How will it work?

Eligible households within the selected pilot areas will be given the opportunity to save money on their water and power/gas bills by purchasing and installing one of the following shower efficiency products:

  • A 3-star WELS rated efficient shower head
  • A flow saver washer
  • A shower timer.

These products will be made available for sale at a discounted price.

What are the eligibility criteria?

  • Households within the selected pilot areas, and
  • Shower flow rate greater than 9L a minute, and
  • Shower head that can be held in the hand, i.e. not wall/ceiling mounted, and
  • If you are renting, have permission from landlord to install new shower fittings.

When and where will the pilot take place?

The Shower and Save project will trial four different ways to reach households:

  1. A household door knocking campaign in three east Auckland neighbourhoods (Jun/Jul 2018)
  2. Workplace presentations (Jul/Aug 2018)
  3. Community group presentations (Jul/Aug 2018)
  4. In-store campaign with one home hardware store on the north shore (Jul/Aug 2018).

How will the pilot be promoted?

Eligible households will receive notification of the opportunity to participate in the Shower and Save pilot through one of the following:

  • A direct mail letter to the householder from Auckland Council
  • A direct communication from their workplace or community group on behalf of Auckland Council
  • The Live Lightly Shower and Save team will be wearing branded T Shirts and carry Shower and Save name tags.

Pilot evaluation

All participants will be invited to take part in a survey to help us better understand their experience, motivation and the project impact. All responses and information collected as part of this project will be kept confidential in accordance with Auckland Council’s privacy terms.
