While you're on holiday

Use a timer

Leaving lamps on while you’re away so your house doesn’t look empty? Use a timer switch to turn them on at different times of the day. They’re available at most hardware stores, aren’t too expensive and are easy to use – plug your lamp into the timer switch and then plug the switch into the wall.

Fill up the fridge

Fridges are big electricity guzzlers and the most efficient way to run them is by keeping them full. While you’re away, fill your fridge with bottles or containers of water to avoid energy waste. If you’re going to be away for a while, then defrost it and turn it off. Fridges benefit from a holiday too and will run more efficiently when you’re back.

Pull the plug

Some gadgets and appliances draw a small bit of electricity when they’re plugged in, even if they’re switched off. Pull the plugs out at the wall before you go. It will help make sure you don’t leave anything in standby mode too.
